This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the publication Cisco 3800 Expansion Router Module Installation and Configuration Guide.

This publication will step you through the initial site preparation and installation of the Cisco 3800 Expansion Router Module (ERM). Troubleshooting, maintenance procedures, and cable specifications are also provided.
Basic software configuration information only is included in this publication. For detailed software configuration information, refer to the Cisco IOS configuration guide and command reference publications. These publications are available on the Documentation CD that came with your Cisco 3800 ERM, or you can order printed copies.
This publication is designed for the person installing the Cisco 3800 ERM who should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.
The major sections of this publication are as follows:
- Chapter 1, "Overview of the Cisco 3800 ERM," discusses the features and specifications of the Expansion Router Module.
- Chapter 2, "Preparing to Install the Cisco 3800 ERM," discusses environmental requirements, safety recommendations, and describes the various ports and how to prepare for connections between networks and ports.
- Chapter 3, "Installing the Cisco 3800 ERM," includes basic installation information and discusses making connections to LANs, the Cisco 3800 Combo card, console terminal, and modem.
- Chapter 4,"Configuring the Cisco 3800 ERM," discusses initial configuration of the ERM using the prompt-driven System Configuration Dialog, configuration mode, or AutoInstall. This chapter also provides some basic information about how to use Cisco IOS software.
- Appendix A,"Maintaining the Cisco 3800 ERM," discusses selected maintenance procedures, including replacing PROMs and SIMMs, password recovery, virtual configuration register settings, and system code upgrades.
- Appendix B,"Cable Specifications," provides pinouts for the various ports on the ERM and associated cables.
