About the Cisco 3800 and Cisco IOS Software

About the Cisco 3800 and Cisco IOS Software

More than 70 new Cisco IOS commands specifically support the Cisco 3800 series of products. These new commands are documented in this publication and in the Cisco IOS software configuration guide and command reference publications.

This chapter provides an overview of Cisco IOS software and the commands you use with the Cisco 3800 series of products. It includes the following sections:

Cisco 3800 Series Products

Cisco 3800 systems are members of a series of access products that provide multiservice switching access concentrator functionality to your site's network while introducing the ability to transport data, video, and voice traffic. The units can be used in an office or laboratory setting. Managing a variety of data and voice traffic types, Cisco 3800 systems optimize your network's bandwidth with protocol synchronization and negotiation. Cisco 3800 models offer sub-T1 and E1 data and voice integration, interworking seamlessly with Cisco StrataCom IGX and IPX switches.

Cisco IOS Software Basics

This section provides you with basic information about Cisco IOS software. It includes the following sections:

Cisco IOS Operation Modes

Note The host name in this chapter's examples is Europa. Your system's prompt will reflect the host name at your site.

Six major command modes are available in the Cisco 3800 series version of Cisco IOS. The most relevant are listed in Table 1-1. Each is characterized by its own prompt and provides a different group of related commands.

Table  1-1: Cisco IOS Command Modes
Mode Command to Enter Mode Prompt
User EXEC mode Europa>
Privileged EXEC Mode enable exec Europa#
Global Configuration Mode configure privileged exec Europa(conf)#
Interface Configuration Mode interface type/number Europa(conf-if)#
Voice Interface Configuration Mode voice interface type/number Europa(conf-voice)#
Dial Peer Configuration Mode dial peer voice tag pots Europa(conf-dial-peer)#

User EXEC mode

When you first log in, you are automatically in user EXEC mode, from which you can connect to remote devices, temporarily change terminal settings, perform basic tests and list system information. The EXEC commands available at the user level are a subset of those available at the privileged level.

Privileged EXEC Mode

From user EXEC mode, enter the enable EXEC command to get to privileged EXEC mode. From privileged EXEC mode you can set operating parameters that influence commands in user EXEC mode, including the configure command. Use the configure command to access all other command modes. Privileged EXEC mode also contains high-level testing commands such as debug.

Global Configuration Mode

From privileged EXEC mode, enter the configure privileged EXEC command to get to global configuration mode. Global configuration commands configure features affecting the system as a whole.

Interface Configuration Mode

From global configuration mode, enter the interface type /number command. You configure IP addresses for individual interfaces using interface configuration mode. For example, enter the interface serial 0/0 command to configure serial 0 interface on the Combo card installed in the first slot.

Voice Interface Configuration Mode

From global configuration mode, enter the voice-interface type /number command. For example, enter the voice-interface 0/1 command to configure the V2 voice interface on the first Combo card installed.

Dial Peer Configuration Mode

From global configuration mode, enter the dial-peer voice tag pots command. For example, enter the dial-peer voice 500 pots command to configure dial peer 500.

Getting Context-Sensitive Help

In any command mode, you can get a list of available commands by entering a question mark (?):

Europa> ?

To obtain a list of commands beginning with a particular character sequence, enter those characters followed immediately by a question mark. Do not include a space. This form of help is called word help.

Europa# co?
configure connect copy

To list keywords or arguments, enter a question mark in place of a keyword or argument. Include a space before the question mark. This form of help is called command syntax help, because it reminds you which keywords or arguments are applicable based on the command, keywords, and arguments you have already entered.

Europa# configure ?
   memory	Configure from NV memory
network	Configure from a TFTP network host
   terminal	Configure from the terminal
   <cr>

You can abbreviate commands and keywords by entering enough characters to identify the command uniquely. For example, abbreviate the show command to sh or the configure command to conf.
