About This Manual
This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the Cisco 2000 Quick-Start guide.
This publication steps you through the initial site preparation, installation, and troubleshooting of the hardware installation. It also covers selected maintenance procedures.
This publication is designed for an expert router installer. To use this publication, you should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician. For system configuration, an expert knowledge of the router system software is also required.
For a tutorial on initial software configuration, refer to the Router Products Getting Started Guide. For more advanced configuration applications, refer to the Router Products Configuration and Reference publication.
The major sections of this publication follow:
- Chapter 1, "Product Overview," contains an overview of the router's feature set and physical specifications.
- Chapter 2, "Preparing for Installation," includes safety recommendations, tools and equipment, site requirements, an installation checklist, console and auxiliary port cable connection considerations, network connection considerations, and instructions for inspecting the new system.
- Chapter 3, "Installing the Router," includes instructions for making external connections.
- Chapter 4, "Command Summary," includes a summary of the licensed command set.
- Chapter 5, "Troubleshooting the Router Hardware Configuration," includes a troubleshooting overview and sections on problem solving, reading LED indications, and using system bootstrap diagnostics.
- Appendix A, "Cable Specifications," provides cable illustrations, cable pinouts, and signal descriptions for RS-232 console and auxiliary port cables, serial cables, and Ethernet (AUI) cables.
- Appendix B, "Software Configuration Register," describes procedures for testing system memory and the central processing unit (CPU) by using the bootstrap diagnostic tests and command options.
- Appendix C, "Operating Conditions for the United Kingdom," describes the operating conditions for use in the United Kingdom.
- Appendix D, "Operating Conditions for the European Community," describes the operating conditions for use in the European Community.
This publication uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information:
Command descriptions use these conventions:
- Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
- Variables for which you supply values are in italic font.
- Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
- Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and are separated by a vertical
bar ( | ).
Examples use these conventions:
- Terminal sessions are printed in a
screen
font.
- Information you enter is in a
boldface screen
font.
- Nonprinting characters are shown in angle brackets (< >).
- Information the system displays is in
screen
font, with default responses in square brackets
([ ]).
Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.
Timesaver Means the described action saves time. You can save time by performing the action described in the paragraph.
Caution Means reader be careful. You are capable of doing something that might result in equipment damage or loss of data.
Warning Means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and standard practices for preventing accidents.
