This manual is for the technician installing and maintaining the Catalyst 2800. It is assumed the individual is familiar with the concepts and terminology of 10BaseT and local area networks.
The manual is organized as follows:
"Fast Install Guide" is an installation procedure for experienced users.
"Introduction" describes the key features of the Catalyst 2800.
"Planning" outlines the preinstallation and cabling guidelines and includes several sample configurations.
"Concepts" explains some of the Catalyst 2800's features in greater detail, including VLANs, the Spanning-Tree Protocol, multicast registration and the available switching modes.
"Installation" contains the complete procedures for installing your Catalyst 2800 on a rack, table, or shelf.
"Out-of-Band Management" is a menu-by-menu explanation of the management console. This application allows you to configure the Catalyst 2800 and display statistics about the switch's operation.
"In-Band Management" describes how to configure several third-party network management platforms to work with the Catalyst 2800. A table lists the MIB objects you can use to configure and manage the switch.
"Troubleshooting" describes some problems that may arise and their recommended solutions.
"Technical Specifications" is a list of the physical, electrical, and environmental characteristics of the Catalyst 2800. This includes schematics for crossover and straight-through cables.
