About This Guide
This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the CiscoWorks User Guide Addendum. It also lists related Cisco publications.
This publication provides corrections and supplementary information to the CiscoWorks User Guide for Release 2.0/2.1. This guide specifically covers the CiscoWorks product running on the NetView for AIX network management systems (NMS).
This publication does not describe specific network management platform features; it covers CiscoWorks applications only. This publication assumes that you are familiar with the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
This publication is designed for the Cisco Systems user who is responsible for planning, managing, and analyzing an internetwork. This includes network managers, operators, and system administrators, who should have prior networking experience, be familiar with Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), their SNMP network management platform and operating system, and be aware of their own network topology. Familiarity with database programs is also beneficial.
This publication is divided into the following sections:
- CiscoWorks Getting Started---Provides a getting started overview on CiscoWorks and using CiscoWorks commonly used applications.
- Fault Management---Describes the CiscoWorks fault management features that help you monitor and diagnose network problems. This includes diagnosing individual devices, lines, and interfaces, detecting potential faults, and recovering from problems.
- Managing Cisco Device Configurations---Describes the configuration features that enable you to control your Cisco Systems device configurations.
- Troubleshooting CiscoWorks Errors---Describes troubleshooting file permissions during configuration, running CiscoWorks applications from the command line, and common error messages associated with CiscoWorks applications.
The command descriptions use these conventions:
- Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
- Variables for which you supply values are in italic font.
- Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
- Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and are separated by a vertical bar (|).
The examples use these conventions:
- Terminal sessions and information the system displays are printed in a
screen
font.
- Information you enter is in
boldface screen
font.
- Nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are shown in angle brackets (< >).
- Information the system displays is in
screen
font, with default responses in square brackets ([ ]).
This publication also uses the following conventions:
- Menu and button items are in boldface font.
- Selecting a series of menu items is indicated by the following convention: Select Administer>CiscoWorks System>Process Mgr.
- Directories and filenames are in italic font.
- If items such as buttons or menu options are grayed out on application windows it means that you do not have permission to use these options.
Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in the manual.
Timesaver Means the described action saves time. You can save time by performing the action described in the paragraph.
Caution Means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data.
