Installing on a UNIX Workstation

Installing on a UNIX Workstation

If you are installing the AS5200 Manager application on a UNIX workstation, you can access the Cisco AS5200 package file in two ways: from Cisco Connection Online (CCO), or by using the anonymous file transfer protocol (FTP) service. This chapter describes both ways, and includes these sections:

The tar file (*.tar) includes a ReadMe file and the AS5200 Manager application, which is an electronic network management package file (*.pkg). After you add the package file to CiscoView, you can view and manage the Cisco AS5200 Universal Access Server using CiscoView.

System and Software Requirements

Before adding the Cisco AS5200 package file to CiscoView, make sure of the following:

Downloading from Cisco Connection Online

Cisco Connection Online (CCO), formerly Cisco Information Online (CIO), is the Cisco online support channel.

The following is a quick-reference overview of the steps necessary for downloading a tar file from CCO. Details about these steps are in the sections that follow.

  1. Check the version of CiscoView.

  2. Close CiscoView.

  3. Create a cv_pkgs directory in the install_directory on your workstation.

  4. Change the default directory to cv_pkgs.

  5. Access CCO.

  6. Download the tar file onto your workstation.

  7. Untar the tar file.

  8. Add the package file to CiscoView.

  9. Check the cvinstall.log file.

Check the Version of CiscoView

Follow these steps to check the version of CiscoView:

Step 1 From any directory on your workstation, open CiscoView by entering nmcview.

Step 2 Select Help, then About CiscoView. Make sure the version number is 3.1 or later.

Step 3 Proceed to the next section, "Close CiscoView."

Close CiscoView

One way to close CiscoView is to select File, then Exit from the CiscoView Main window. Closing CiscoView is important! The package file will not install correctly if CiscoView is running during the installation.

Create a cv_pkgs Directory in the Install_Directory on Your Workstation

Follow these steps to create a cv_pkgs directory:

Step 1 Change to the directory containing the CiscoView application files. This guide refers to this directory as the install_directory. For example: /usr/nms.

Step 2 Create a cv_pkgs subdirectory by entering a command similar to the following:

The cv_pkgs subdirectory is the target directory used when downloading the tar file from CCO.

Step 3 Proceed to the next section, "Change the Default Directory to cv_pkgs."

Change the Default Directory to cv_pkgs

Follow these steps to change the default directory to cv_pkgs:

Step 1 Enter a command similar to the following at the command line prompt of your workstation:

Step 2 Proceed to the next section, "Access CCO."

Access CCO

Use a Web browser to access CCO. Depending on the type of network access you have, you can log in as either of the following:

Log in as either a guest or registered user as described in the next sections.

Logging in as a Guest User of CCO and Downloading the Tar File

If you are not registered on CCO, you can be granted a special access code to access the AS5200 tar file. Follow these steps to log in as a guest and download the tar file:

Step 1 From a Web browser, access CCO by entering the following URL:

Step 2 To get a special access code, contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC):

When you call, select the telephone menu option for Technical Support. TAC is part of Technical Support. Ask to be forwarded to the CiscoView support team. You can also send email to tac@cisco.com or cco-team@cisco.com. Ask for a special access code for downloading the AS5200 network management tar file.

Step 3 After obtaining a special access code, at the prompt, enter your special access code.

Step 4 Press OK to pass the security warning message.

Step 5 Optionally, read the ReadMe file. To view the ReadMe file, click the selection button to the left of the ReadMe file. Locate the Execute button and click Execute. (If necessary, use the scroll bar to scroll up to the Execute button.)

Select the server closest to your part of the world. The ReadMe file appears. Print it if you like.

Step 6 If you did not read the ReadMe file, skip to the next step (to select the tar file.)

If you are viewing the ReadMe file, click the Back button twice to return to the CiscoView Update Packages window.

Step 7 Select the tar file by clicking the button to the left of the tar file you want to download.

The tar file contains the package file (*.pkg) and associated ReadMe file.

Step 8 Locate the Execute button and click Execute. (If necessary, use the scroll bar to scroll up to the Execute button.)

Step 10 Depending on your browser, click the Save File button, or select the File menu, then Save As. You might be prompted to save the file to your workstation, with a message like "Choose How to Handle," or "Save As." Again, depending on your browser, a Filter window might appear with Directories, Files, and Selection sections.

By default, your home directory is selected as the target directory for the tar file download. We recommend that you download the tar file to the cv_pkgs directory on your workstation.

Step 11 If the Filter window appears, complete this step. In the Selection section of the Filter window, enter the complete destination path and filename of the tar file to be downloaded. For example:

Step 12 After the file is downloaded, close the Web browser window.

Step 13 Proceed to the section "Untar the Tar File."
