This chapter provides information on the Cisco 3600 series access servers/routers. It is organized into the following sections:
The Cisco 3600 series is a multifunction platform that combines dial access, routing, and LAN-to-LAN services and multiservice integration of voice, video, and data in the same device. The Cisco 3600 series includes the Cisco 3640 and Cisco 3620 access servers/routers. As modular solutions, the Cisco 3640 and Cisco 3620 have the flexibility to meet both current and future connectivity requirements. The Cisco 3600 series is fully supported by Cisco IOS software, which includes dial-up connectivity, LAN-to-LAN routing, data and access security, WAN optimization, and multimedia features.
The Cisco 3640 has four network module slots; the Cisco 3620 has two slots. Each network module slot accepts a variety of network module interface cards, including LAN and WAN mixed media cards supporting Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring, and a variety of WAN technologies. These cards provide the foundation of LAN and WAN connectivity on a single, modular, network module. Additional applications are supported with a series of network module cards offering digital modems, asynchronous and synchronous serial, ISDN PRI, and ISDN BRI interfaces.
Figure 61 and Figure 62 show the Cisco 3600 series router rear views.
The Cisco 3640 and Cisco 3620 routers support the following network applications and services:
Table 45 provides a summary of features, and Table 46 provides the environmental specifications for the Cisco 3600 series routers.

The hardware options available for the Cisco 3600 series are described in the following sections:
Table 49 lists the product numbers for the Cisco 3600 series hardware options.
The Cisco 3640 and Cisco 3620 routers are 4- and 2-slot modular access routers, respectively, whose LAN and WAN connections are configured by means of interchangeable network modules and WAN interface cards.
The following network modules are available for the Cisco 3640 and Cisco 3620 routers:
Figure 63 shows how a vacant chassis slot on the Cisco 3640 accepts a mixed media network module, which in turn accepts a WAN interface card.
The digital modem network modules significantly enhance the dial access flexibility and scalability of the Cisco 3600 series platform. Each network module supports up to 30 digital modems. The digital modem network modules use either the single or dual PRI network modules to offer support for up to 60 remote modem users (using two network modules), at speeds up to 56 Kbps. K56flex modem technology is currently supported, and future standards will be supported as they become available.
The digital modem network modules are available with 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 modems per module, and are field-upgradable in six modem increments. Modem management software is also available for network managers who need to centrally monitor modem activity.
Figure 64 illustrates the digital modem network modules.
The versatile mixed-media network modules can have up to two fixed LAN interfaces and two user-configurable WAN interfaces. The fixed LAN interfaces reside on the main board and can be used in one Ethernet configuration, two Ethernet configurations, or one Ethernet and one Token Ring configuration. The first Ethernet port supports 10BaseT and AUI connectors while the second Ethernet port supports 10BaseT connectors only. The Token Ring port supports 4- and 16-Mbps ring speeds and STP and UTP interfaces.
The main board has two expansion slots for the WAN interface cards. The supported WAN modules include the 5-in-1 high-speed serial, ISDN BRI with S/T and U interfaces, and 1-port 4-wire 56 kbps DSU/CSU. The WAN high speed interface supports speeds up to 2.048 Mbps, full-duplex.
Figure 65, Figure 66, and Figure 67 illustrate the mixed-media network modules.
The channelized T1/ ISDN PRI modules are available with and without a built-in CSU and with one or two ports. The channelized T1/ISDN PRI modules connect to an external CSU. (See Figure 68 and Figure 69.) The channelized T1/ISDN PRI CSU modules connect directly to the network. (See Figure 70 and Figure 71.) Each of the T1 modules provides up to 24 virtual channels per T1 port.
The channelized E1/ISDN PRI modules are available with one or two E1 ports with balanced or unbalanced interfaces and are compatible with the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) G.703/G.704 specifications. (See Figure 72 through Figure 75.) The channelized E1/ISDN PRI modules receive and transmit data bidirectionally at the E1 rate of 2.048 Mbps and provide up to 30 virtual channels per E1 port.
When configured for PRI, the T1/E1 modules are not compatible with the 4-port or 8-port ISDN BRI modules in the same chassis. However, they are compatible when configured for channelized service.
Four versions of BRI network modules are available. Each 4- and 8-port module has the option of an S/T interface or an onboard NT1 for each port. (See Figure 76 through Figure 79.) These modules are installed in any slot in the Cisco 3600 series routers. Local SRAM is used for buffer descriptors and input queues. The 4-port module is not field upgradeable to the 8-port module.
With all eight BRI ports running continuous data (144 kbps each) and 50-byte packets, the maximum performance possible is 5760 pps and an aggregate full-duplex data rate of 2.3 Mbps.
The ISDN BRI network modules support the following features:
When used with corresponding octal cables, the 16-port and 32-port asynchronous network modules provide 16 or 32 EIA/TIA-232 data terminal equipment (DTE) serial interfaces at speeds up to 134.4 kbps. (See Figure 80 and Figure 81.)
The 4- and 8-port asynchronous/synchronous network modules are high density, low-speed serial modules used in the Cisco 3600 series routers. (See Figure 82 and Figure 83.) They provide up to eight synchronous ports with speeds up to 128 kbps or eight asynchronous ports with speeds up to 115.2 kbps with 10 percent return traffic.
The 4-port module is not upgradeable to the 8-port module.
There are two different Ethernet network modules available for the Cisco 3600 series routers: 1-port and 4-port. The 1-port Ethernet network module has one Ethernet attachment unit interface (AUI) DB-15 connector and one 10BaseT RJ-45 connector. Only one of these two connections can be active at a time. (See Figure 84.)
The 4-port Ethernet network module supports up to four Ethernet connections. Ethernet port 0 uses either the AUI (DB-15) connector on the right side of the module or the 10BaseT (RJ-45) connector next to it, but only one of these two connections can be active at a time. Ethernet ports 1, 2, and 3 use 10BaseT connectors; these ports do not provide an AUI connector. (See Figure 85.)
The 1-port and 4-port Ethernet network modules require Cisco IOS Release 11.2(4)XA, 11.2(5)P, or later.
The 1-port Fast Ethernet network module has one RJ-45 port. (See Figure 86.) This port connects to two-pair Category 5 UTP cabling following the 100BaseTX physical layer protocol.
The 4-port serial network module has four DB-60 ports and provides a data rate of 8 Mbps on port 0, 4 Mbps each on port 0 and port 2, or 2 Mbps on all four ports simultaneously. (See Figure 87.)
The compression network module compresses and decompresses data passing through interfaces on other network modules or WAN interface cards in the router. (See Figure 88.) The following interfaces are supported:
Hardware compression is supported only over PPP links and only by means of the Stacker compression algorithm.
The following WAN interface cards are available for network modules installed in a Cisco 3640 or Cisco 3620 router:
Figure 89 through Figure 92 illustrate the WAN interface cards.
Table 47 lists the maximum number of network modules that can be configured on a 3640/3620, and the minimum IOS version required. Table 48 lists the number of WAN interface cards that can be configured, along with the minimum IOS version required.

This section describes the memory, power supply, and cable options for the Cisco 3600 series routers.
The Cisco 3600 series uses two types of replaceable or upgradeable memory: DRAM memory and Flash memory. Both types of memory are implemented with SIMMs. Each router has two Flash SIMM sockets and four DRAM SIMM sockets. In the standard Flash memory configuration, the first socket contains a 4-MB Flash SIMM, and the second socket is empty. You can upgrade the Flash memory to 32 MB on both routers. Each Cisco 3600 router ships standard with 16 MB of DRAM. The Cisco 3640 is expandable to 128 MB of DRAM. The Cisco 3620 is expandable to 64 MB of DRAM.
The Cisco 3600 series routers use a DRAM memory configuration that is different from other Cisco routers. Unlike the Cisco 4000 series routers, for example, which have separate physical locations for processor memory and packet memory, the Cisco 3600 series routers use one pool of DRAM memory. The DRAM is partitioned into processor memory and packet memory areas. For example, the memory of a 16-MB DRAM configuration is split into 12 MB for processor memory and 4 MB for the packet memory.
The Cisco 3600 allows you to load new system images using a PCMCIA Flash memory card. You can also load images from a local or remote PC through the console or auxiliary ports using the Xmodem or Ymodem protocols.
The Cisco 3600 series routers offer the hardware, network modules, WAN interface cards, memory options, power supplies, and cables listed in Table 49. If a product number ends with an equal sign (=), the item can be ordered only as a spare. If a product number does not end with an equal sign, the item can be ordered as a spare or as a configurable part of a system order. If a base system product number ends with -CH, the item is available either through the Cisco authorized reseller channel, or through your local Cisco sales office. Other hardware options can also be ordered through the Cisco authorized reseller channel.
