About This Guide
This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the CiscoWorks User Guide. It also lists related Cisco publications.
The primary purpose of this publication is to provide information on the CiscoWorks product. CiscoWorks may be running on a variety of network management stations (NMS) including SunNet Manager (SNM), HP OpenView, and NetView for AIX.
This publication does not describe specific network management platform features; it covers CiscoWorks applications only. This publication assumes that you are familiar with your Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) platform.
This publication is designed for the Cisco Systems user who is responsible for planning, managing, and analyzing an internetwork. This includes network managers, operators, and system administrators, who should have prior networking experience, be familiar with Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), their SNMP network management platform and operating system, and be aware of their own network topology. Familiarity with database programs is also beneficial.
This publication is divided into the following sections:
- Product Overview---Describes CiscoWorks functionality and tasks.
- CiscoWorks Getting Started---Provides a getting started overview on learning and using CiscoWorks commonly used applications.
- Fault Management---Describes the CiscoWorks fault management features that help you monitor and diagnose network problems. This includes diagnosing individual devices, lines, and interfaces, detecting potential faults, and recovering from problems.
- Performance Management---Describes the CiscoWorks features that help you manage the performance level of your network, including managing individual devices, lines, and interfaces.
- Managing Cisco Device Configurations---Describes the configuration features that enable you to control your Cisco Systems device configurations.
- Device Management---Describes the Device Management and Sync w/Sybase applications and how to use them to build and update the CiscoWorks database.
- Setting Up Domains and Securing Applications---Describes how to set up collections of devices, secure CiscoWorks applications, and set up users and group privileges.
- Database Administration---Contains information that your database management system (DBMS) system administrator will use to perform basic database maintenance.
- Using CiscoWorks Process Manager---Provides detailed information on the CiscoWorks processes.
- MIB Files and Objects---Contains information on how to modify existing MIB files and establish new MIB files, as well as a brief example of MIB objects and their use with CiscoWorks polling capabilities.
- Troubleshooting CiscoWorks Errors---Describes troubleshooting file permissions during configuration, running CiscoWorks applications from the command line, and common error messages associated with CiscoWorks applications.
- CiscoWorks Database Tables---Contains information on the CiscoWorks database table structures.
- References and Recommended Reading---Contains a list of suggested reading materials, including Cisco technical publications, internetworking and network management references, MIB references, and network management-related RFCs.
The command descriptions use these conventions:
- Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
- Variables for which you supply values are in italic font.
- Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
- Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and are separated by a vertical bar (|).
The examples use these conventions:
- Terminal sessions and information the system displays are printed in a
screen
font.
- Information you enter is in
boldface screen
font.
- Nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are shown in angle brackets (< >).
- Information the system displays is in
screen
font, with default responses in square brackets ([ ]).
This publication also uses the following conventions:
- Menu and button items are in boldface font.
- Selecting a series of menu items is indicated by the following convention: Select Administer>CiscoWorks System>Process Mgr.
- Directories and filenames are in italic font.
- If items such as buttons or menu options are grayed out on application windows it means that you do not have permission to use these options.
Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in the manual.
Timesaver Means the described action saves time. You can save time by performing the action described in the paragraph.
Caution Means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data.

- CiscoWorks administration and installation guide---Provides new users with an overview of the installation process and instructions for completing an initial installation and configuration. This guide also focuses on the SNMP network management platform-specific environment and how CiscoWorks relies on these platform-specific tools.
- Cisco Systems Internetworking Technology Terms and Acronyms---Defines internetworking technologies and specific Cisco terms.
A set of Sybase documentation accompanies the CiscoWorks product upon request. The CiscoWorks User Guide references the appropriate sections of the following Sybase documentation for use with CiscoWorks:
- System Administration Guide, Version 5.1
- Command Reference, Version 4.9
- Data Workbench User's Guide, Version 5.0
- Transact-SQL User's Guide, Version 4.9
- Report Workbench User's Guide, Version 5.0
